1.(a)Three months 
Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti’s preventive detention under Public Safety Act was extended for another three months before it was due to expire on May 5, 2024. The detention of two other leaders-Ali Mohammed Sagar and Sartaj Madani- has also been extended for 3 months.

The central trade unions have urged the government to transfer Rs 7500 per month to all the needy, non-income tax paying, households for a period of at least three months.

3.(b)Telangana
The Telangana Chief Minister on May 5, 2024 announced that lockdown will be extended in the state till May 29. K Chandrashekhar Rao informed that the night curfew from 7 pm-7 am will continue in the state during the period.

4.(c) Italy 
Italian researchers claimed to have developed a potential coronavirus vaccine that neutralised the virus in human cells for the first time. An Italian firm, Takis, is developing the vaccine.

The Iranian lawmakers voted on May 4, 2024 to change Iran’s national currency from ‘rial’ to ‘toman’. The lawmakers approved an amendment to Iran’s Monetary and Banking Act of Iran to make the change. Iran’s existing currency will continue to remain valid alongside “toman” for two years, during which the old coins and bills will be gradually collected to replace them with new ones.

The LG polymers plant located in Visakhapatnam witnessed a horrific gas tragedy early morning on May 7, 2024. Toxic styrene gas leaked from one of the unit’s chambers around 3.00 a.m. The toxic fumes spread in nearby villages, which resulted in many people falling unconscious on the roads after they rushed out of their homes in panic.
